In this guide, we discuss the most common challenges that people who drink in bed face and recommend the best products to solve these problems.
We also have some helpful tips on how to deal with these issues.
Common Issues That Come With Drinking In Bed
Here are the issues that people who drink in bed often face. Some of these may also affect you if it’s your partner who drinks in bed.
Scroll further down to see a list of top rated products that we recommend for each problem.
Spills On The Bed or Floor
No matter how careful you are, there’s always a risk of spilling a drink on the bed or floor.
Bed spills are especially bad because you could damage the mattress and leave stains on the bedding.
The best way to avoid a big mess is placing your drinks on a bed tray like our top pick, the Pipishell Bamboo bed tray. You can also use a bed cup holder like the popular Cup Cozy Pillow.
And just to be safe, get a mattress protector or a waterproof bed cover. Our favorite mattress protector is the PlushDeluxe premium bamboo mattress protector and our top bed cover pick is the Ameritex Waterproof Bed Cover.
As for floor spills, keep a wet dry vacuum handy. It’s much easier and faster to clean up with it compared to mopping up the mess. Our top recommendation is the Tineco iFLOOR3 cordless wet dry vacuum.
Drinks Getting Warm
If you often drink cold beverages like beer, wine, or soda in bed, you are going to have a challenge keeping them cold.
Instead of making frequent trips to the kitchen refrigerator to get a cold drink, how about keeping the drinks cold right in your bedroom?
You could use a cooler box, but it’s not the kind of thing you put in your bedroom. It’s big, it’s boxy and kinda ugly.
The best cooling solution we recommend is a beverage cooler. It’s like a mini fridge for drinks. The best one we found for the bedside is the Antarctic Star 1.6cu.ft Beverage Refrigerator.
If you are a mostly wine person, a modern ice bucket like the Huski Wine Chiller is perfect. We also love the Vacu Vin Rapid Ice cooler.
Frequent Kitchen Trips For Coffee
If you like your coffee in bed, it’s tedious to keep going to the kitchen to make a cuppa. You can carry the entire carafe to the bedroom, but it’ll get cold pretty quickly.
The best solution is to have a coffee maker right next to your bed. We chose the Ninja CP307 as our top pick because of how versatile it is. It can make different hot and cold drinks.
Alternatively, get a thermal carafe that keeps coffee hot for up to 12 hours. The best one we found is the Cresimo 68 oz thermal coffee carafe.
Lack of A Surface To Place Drinks
Placing your drink on the bed is a bad idea because of the aforementioned issue of spills. You don't want to keep holding it in your hand either especially if it’s cold or hot, or you are working.
The night stand might work but it can be inconvenient to keep reaching over to get your drink.
We found two solutions that work great. The first is a tray table like one of those breakfast trays. The Pipishell Bamboo bed tray is our most favorite one.
The second solution is a bed cup holder like the Cup Cozy Pillow.
Difficulty Getting Ice
If you drink a lot of iced drinks, constantly going to the kitchen to get more ice is tiresome. On the other hand, you cannot keep ice for long at room temperature.
Fortunately, ice making machines have gotten compact enough that you can put one in your bedroom and have easy access to ice whenever you want.
Our top recommendation is the Newair CounterTop Ice Maker Machine.
Empty Bottles/Cans Making A Mess
It’s surprising how quickly empty bottles and cans can build up in the bedroom. Suddenly, you have a mess by your bedside and sometimes even under the bed.
This is not only messy, cans and bottles on the floor can also attract ants and other critters attracted by the last droplets of soda or beer in the can.
For cans, we recommend keeping a small bin next to your bed. We like the iTouchless 2.5 Gallon Sensor trash can.
It’s compact and you don't have to get out of bed to step on the pedal. Just wave a hand over the sensor and the lid opens.
For beer bottles, we recommend a bottle caddy like this BARGIFTS 6-bottle caddy. You can then take them out of the bedroom when the caddy fills up.
Discomfort When Reclining/Sitting Up In Bed
Sitting up in bed for a long time can be uncomfortable. It’s also bad for your back and can lead to pain and aches in your lower back, neck and shoulders.
Instead of leaning directly on the headboard or putting your regular pillow behind you, we recommend a backrest pillow.
The one we recommend for most people who eat, drink, read, or watch television in bed is the Husband Pillow XXL.

Best Solutions For Drinking In Bed
Waterproof Mattress Protector and Bed Cover
Spills on your bed are not just messy, they can lead to mold and attract bugs like cockroaches and ants.
They can also cause hard to remove stains. In some cases, stains on your mattress can void the mattress warranty or return policy.
At the very least, you should have a mattress protector. You can wash the duvet and sheets, but it’s hard to clean a stained or smelly mattress. Our top mattress protector pick is the PlushDeluxe Premium Bamboo mattress protector.
If you want to also protect your bedding, get a waterproof mattress cover as well. It’ll keep any spills away from the sheets and comforter. Our favorite one is the Ameritex Waterproof Bed Cover.
Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner
Instead of struggling with paper towels or a mop to clean up a liquid spill on the floor, get a wet dry vacuum cleaner.
It’s so much easier and faster to use and you can use it around the house as well to quickly mop and vacuum floors in one go.
Our favorite wet dry vacuum is the Tineco iFLOOR3 cordless wet dry vacuum. It cleans up spills on hard flooring.
Beverage Coolers & Chillers
There’s lot of options for keeping drinks cold. Here are the best ones for keeping beverages cold in your bedroom.
- Beer sleeves – beer sleeves or koozies wrap around a can or bottle to insulate it and keep it cold. We like these CURRENT CO. blank beer sleeves because you can customize them.
- Wine chillers – a wine chiller is great for keeping a single bottle of wine cold without using ice. Our favorite one is the Vacu Vin Rapid Ice cooler because it cools wine and keeps it chilled.
- Beer chillers/coolers – beer chillers work by enveloping an already cold bottle or can inside a vacuum flask to insulate it. One of the highest rated beer coolers is the Asobu Frosty Beer can and bottle cooler.
- Beverage refrigerator – if you want to keep several drinks at hand, then a beverage refrigerator is the best choice. We recommend the Antarctic Star 1.6cu.ft Beverage Refrigerator. Of course, you can also use a mini fridge like this cute Galanz Retro Compact Refrigerator.
There are several other options we’ve not mentioned like cooler boxes (though I’m not so sure about having a cooler in the bedroom) and insulated beer and wine totes.
Coffee Maker or Thermal Carafe
The best way to enjoy hot coffee is to make a fresh cuppa every time you want one. The best way to do that is to keep a coffee maker right next to you on your bedside.
We picked the Ninja CP307 because it can make a range of hot and cold beverages including coffee and tea. It’s also programmable so you can set it to have a hot cup of coffee ready when you wake up.
If you prefer something more compact, the Wirsh Single Serve Coffee Maker is also programmable.
Not a big fan of a coffee maker in the bedroom? Get a thermal carafe instead. Our top pick is the Cresimo 68 oz thermal coffee carafe. It’s a vacuum flask that keeps coffee hot for hours.
A thermal carafe is better at maintaining the taste and quality of coffee compared to microwaving coffee, using a hot plate or leaving it in an insulated French press.
Microwaving causes uneven heat spots and can burn the coffee in some areas. A hot plate can also burn coffee by overcooking it. Leaving coffee in an insulated French press causes over-extraction and can make the coffee bitter.
Bedside Ice Maker
Forget your freezer’s ice maker. It’s slow and it’s too far away anyway.
These days, you can get a compact and nice looking ice maker that’s perfect for your bedroom. Our favorite one right now is the Newair CounterTop Ice Maker Machine.
Portable ice makers make ice in minutes and are usually quiet except when dropping ice into the bucket.
Bed Tray Table
A bed tray table is usually for eating in bed, but it’s also perfect for placing a drink on. It provides a convenient place to put your drink and reduces the risk of a spill on your bed.
Look for a tray table like our top pick, the Pipishell Bamboo bed tray, with a lip all round to keep drinks from sliding off.
Alternatively, use a bed cup holder like the Cup Cozy Pillow.
Trash Can or Bottle Holder To Put Empty Cans & Bottles
A small trash can by the bedside is perfect for disposing of beverage cans. It reduces mess in your bedroom and keeps it pest-free.
I know getting out of bed to press a pedal is a hassle, so we recommend a sensor operated bin like the iTouchless 2.5 Gallon Sensor trash can.
If you have empty beverage bottles, a trash can will fill up quickly and you may not want to mix bottles with other trash.
We recommend a bottle carrier or caddy instead. Put it on the floor or on the nightstand and arrange the empty bottles neatly in it until it’s full. Then you can carry it out and dispose of the bottles with other recyclables.
We love the rustic look of the BARGIFTS 6-bottle caddy and the fact that you can use it for years unlike cheaper cardboard bottle holders.
By the way, you should also consider where to dispose of bottle caps as they can also become an eyesore. If you have a trash can, that’s perfect. Alternatively, get this Veteran Crafted Bottle Opener with Cap Catcher.
Backrest Pillow
We recommend getting a backrest pillow that’s suited to different bed activities like reading, watching TV, eating and drinking.
The best one that's ideal for all of this is Husband Pillow XXL. It's big and cuddly, and comes with head support and armrests.
Top 10 Products For People Who Drink In Bed: Product Reviews
The PlushDeluxe Premium Bamboo Mattress Protector is 100% waterproof. It protects the mattress from all kinds of fluids including water, beverages, sweat and urine.
PROS
- Waterproof
- Comfortable bamboo fabric top
- No crinkling noises
- Breathable
CONS
- Not waterproof on the sides
Our Review
The PlushDeluxe bamboo mattress protector is unlike old fashioned mattress protectors. It provides waterproof protection without being noisy or uncomfortable.
The surface on top consists of a bamboo blend fabric. It feels soft and it’s breathable, so you don’t get hot and sweaty.
The mattress protector also doesn't make crinkly noises when you turn or move.
Unlike some mattress encasement, you don't have to lift your mattress to fit the PlushDeluxe mattress protector onto your mattress. You use it like a fitted sheet.
An elastic skirt goes under the mattress, keeping the mattress protector secure. The skirt can fit mattresses as thick as 18 inches.
You can order the PlushDeluxe bamboo mattress protector in all the usual mattress sizes ranging from twin to Cal King.
Issues & Limitations
The PlushDeluxe bamboo mattress protector is waterproof only on the top surface. The waterproof lining stops at the edge of the mattress, meaning the sides of the mattress protector are not waterproof.
Any spills on the sides of the mattress will go through the mattress protector.
The Ameritex waterproof bed cover protects the mattress as well as the bedding. You drape it on top of the bed and it’ll keep any spills from going through.
PROS
- Waterproof
- Reversible
- Also ideal for the sofa
- Available in different colors
- Machine washable
CONS
- Not ideal for sleeping as it makes the bed hot
Our Review
The Ameritex waterproof bed cover and other bed covers like it are usually meant for use with pets. If your pet has incontinence issues and likes to sleep on your bed, a waterproof bed cover will protect your bedding.
It’s also perfect if you like to drink in bed and don't want to spill anything on the sheets and duvet.
The Ameritex waterproof bed cover is completely impervious to liquids. It’s water resistant on both sides and has a TPU waterproof coating.
The bed cover has a microfiber filling to make it plush and comfortable.
The Ameritex waterproof bed cover is available in several sizes from 30 x 70 inches to 82 x 120 inches. Pick the size that will provide the most coverage on your bed.
You can also get the bed cover in different colors. All the styles are reversible with a different color on each side so you can pick the one that best matches your bedroom decor.
Issues & Limitations
The Ameritex waterproof bed cover is not very breathable. It traps heat at night and can make the bed pretty hot.
If you are a hot sleeper, we don’t recommend keeping the bed cover on the bed when you go to sleep. Use it only when you are drinking something in bed.
Any spills on the sides of the mattress will go through the mattress protector.
The Tineco iFLOOR3 makes it easy to clean up spills on the floor. And because it is cordless, it is super easy to maneuver.
PROS
- Vacuums, mops and dries at the same time
- Powerful suction
- Long battery life
- Self cleaning function
CONS
- Not for use on rugs and carpets
Our Review
Instead of paper towels or a mop, the Tineco iFLOOR3 cordless dry wet vacuum provides an easier way to clean up liquid messes on hard flooring.
It combines a roller brush and powerful suction to vacuum and mop the floors at the same time, leaving behind a dry surface.
The Tineco iFLOOR3 features a tank where you add fresh water and the cleaning solution and a separate tank where the vacuum sucks dirty water into.
An easy to read display tells you when the dirty water tank is full. There’s also an indicator for ‘empty clean water tank’.
It also shows you how much battery life is left. With a full charge, the Tineco iFLOOR3 can clean continuously for up to 25 minutes.
That’s plenty of time to clean up a spill and even vacuum an entire room or two. Once you are done, return it to the charging base so that it’s ready for the next spill.
The Tineco iFLOOR3 has a self cleaning function, making maintenance easy.
Issues & Limitations
Unfortunately, you can only use the Tineco iFLOOR3 on hard flooring like tile hardwood, laminate and linoleum. It doesn't work on rugs and carpets, or rough surfaces.
If you have a carpeted bedroom or a bedside rug, try the Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro instead. It’s designed for hardwood floors as well as carpeting.
The Antarctic Star 1.6 cu.ft beverage cooler is perfectly sized for the bedroom. You can put any drink you want inside including wine, beer, and soda cans.
PROS
- Compact and space-saving
- Glass door with soft interior lighting
- Comes with racks for easy organization
- Powerful compressor cooling
CONS
- Analog temperature control dial
Our Review
This Antarctic Star cooler is one of the smallest beverage refrigerators you’ll find, but it’s perfect for one or two people.
The 1.6 cubic feet capacity is enough to hold a decent number of different beverages like wine bottles, water bottles and beverage cans.
On average, users were able to fit up to 10 wine bottles. If you are cooling just cans, you can fit several dozen of them on racks.
The Antarctic Star cooler has a temperature control dial at the top that lets you set your preferred cooling level.
The glass door provides a nice view of the drinks inside especially with the soft blue interior LED turned on. The light is not bright enough to be an issue at night (most people actually love the ambient light), but you can turn it off if you don't like it.
The cooler itself is not too noisy, so it’s perfect for the bedroom.
Issues & Limitations
The biggest limitation of the Antarctic Star 1.6 cu.ft wine cooler is the temperature control. Because it’s an analog dial, not a digital control, it’s difficult to set a precise temperature.
If you want to store your wine or beer at a specific temperature, you’ll need to get a fridge thermometer and use it to set the dial at the right temperature.
If you don't have the space for a wine cooler in your bedroom or don't want one, a wine chiller is a great alternative.
It’s perfect for cooling a single bottle of wine. We recommend the Vacu Vin Rapid wine cooler. It doesn't just keep wine chilled, it can also chill room temperature wine.
PROS
- Chills wine
- Keeps wine cold for hours
- Perfect for use at home and away
- Fits most wine bottles
CONS
- Takes longer than advertised to chill wine
Our Review
If you keep your wine at room temperature, the Vacu Vin Rapid cooler is the best way to chill it quickly. It’s faster than putting the wine in the fridge or in an ice bucket.
It works using a cooling sleeve that envelopes the wine bottle. A sleek plastic casing covers the sleeve, giving the cooler an elegant look.
You put the cooling element/sleeve in the freezer for at least 6 hours. Then you simply put the sleeve in the plastic casing and then place your bottle inside the sleeve.
The sleeve cools room temperature wine in 10-20 minutes depending on how warm it is. After it’s chilled, it’ll stay warm for 1-3 hours, depending on how warm the wine was when you put it in.
The Vacu Vin Rapid cooler works even better at keeping cold wine cold. It’ll keep the wine chilled for hours, letting you enjoy a bottle of wine leisurely without worrying it’ll get warm.
Remember to put the cooling sleeve back in the freezer when you are done so it’ll be ready for use with the next bottle.
Issues & Limitations
The seller says the Vacu Vin Rapid cooler chills wine in 5 minutes. Unless your wine is already fairly cold, that’s a bit of an exaggeration.
Most users found it takes 10-20 minutes to cool wine that was left at room temperature.
Note that when you chill room temperature wine, it doesn't stay chilled for long afterwards – about 1-3 hours. If you want wine to stay cold for hours, put already chilled wine in the sleeve.
If you drink or eat in bed often, a bed tray table is a must-have. It’s convenient and reduces the risk that you’ll spill drinks on the bed.
The Pipishell bamboo bed tray comes with foldable legs, handles and a lip to keep drinks from sliding off.
PROS
- Eco-friendly bamboo construction
- Easy to use side handles
- Foldable legs
- Protective lip all round
- Includes a media slot for your phone or tablet
CONS
- Legs are not height adjustable
Our Review
The Pipishell bamboo tray is available in a medium and large size.
Make sure you get the large size. It measures 21.7 by 14 inches, which gives you plenty of space for your drink and even a plate of food or snacks.
If you are drinking with your partner, you can fit both your drinks on the large tray.
The medium size is 15.8 by 11 inches. Many users say it’s too small to fit across their lap.
The Pipishell tray comes with extendable legs that splay outwards to keep the tray stable on the bed. You can fold the legs back if you want to place the tray flat on the bedding.
A tall lip around the tray ensures that nothing slips off. Handles on either side of the tray make it easy to carry it especially when it’s loaded.
The Pipishell tray includes a slot along one edge where you can put your phone or tablet, so you can watch as you drink.
Issues & Limitations
The legs on the Pipishell bamboo bed tray are not height adjustable. You cannot set the tray at a different height than the one it is at. You can only unfold and fold the legs.
The Newair countertop ice maker makes a batch of ice cubes in less than 10 minutes and can make 28lbs of ice in 24 hours.
PROS
- Makes ice quickly
- Three ice cube sizes
- Quiet
- Recycling function
- No installation necessary
CONS
- Not much difference in ice sizes
- Ice melts quickly if you don't take it out
Our Review
One of the biggest advantages of a portable ice maker is that you don't need to install it. It doesn't need a water line or a drain line.
So you can set it up anywhere as long as there’s a power outlet, including in your bedroom.
All you need to do is fill the Newair ice maker with water and turn it on. Remember to run a couple of cleaning cycles with vinegar solution before first use to eliminate the plastic smell. Dump those first couple of ice batches.
The Newair has the first batch of ice ready in about 10 minutes. The ice cubes are not really cubes, they are bullet-shaped.
You can use the ice immediately or transfer it to the freezer. You can also just leave it in the ice maker. The ice will melt and the machine will reuse the melt water to make more ice.
The Newair ice maker works quietly. The only noise you’ll hear is a very low hum from the fan and the sound of ice dropping into the bin.
But you can turn off the ice maker when you go to sleep to ensure it doesn't wake you up.
Issues & Limitations
While the manufacturer says the ice bin is insulated, the ice still melts pretty quickly. You either use it immediately when it's ready or transfer it to the freezer.
But it’s no big deal if you leave it in the ice maker. It’ll melt and the ice maker will use it to make more ice. There’s no waste (well, just a bit of power wastage).
The Ninja CP307 is one of the most versatile coffee makers. You can make different kinds of tea and coffee and you can enjoy both hot and cold brews.
PROS
- Versatile
- Programmable timer
- Easy to use control panel
- Six brew sizes
- Includes a frother
- Comes with a thermal carafe
CONS
- No hot plate to keep coffee hot
Our Review
The Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System is a versatile coffee maker with plenty of bells and whistles.
Despite having lots of features, it’s easy to use.
The control panel is laid out intuitively with a digital display that makes it easy to select brew size and bre type.
You can brew five types of coffee and five types of tea. There are separate filter baskets for tea (loose leaf or bagged) and coffee. There’s also a frother for making milky beverages.
As for brew size, there are six options ranging from a single cup to a full carafe. So you can make just the amount of coffee you need.
A delay timer lets you set the coffee maker to automatically brew coffee at a specific time.
The Ninja CP307 comes with a 50 ounce thermal carafe that keeps beverages hot for about two hours.
Issues & Limitations
The Ninja CP307 doesn't come with a hot plate, so brewed coffee in the pot doesn't stay hot for long.
Thankfully, you have the thermal carafe. If you are making a lot of coffee, you can put it in the carafe and it’ll stay warm for up to two hours.
The carafes that come with most coffee makers keep coffee hot only for a short time. If you want to keep coffee or any other beverage hot for longer, get the Cresimo 68 ounce stainless steel carafe.
It can keep drinks hot or cold for up to 12 hours.
PROS
- Long heat retention
- Also great for keeping cold drinks cold
- Large capacity
- Durable steel construction
CONS
- Beverages are hottest over 4-6 hours
- The lid drips coffee
Our Review
If you don't want to bring a coffee maker into your bedroom, a thermal carafe is the next best option.
The Cresimo carafe holds up to 68 ounces of coffee, tea, water, or any beverage. That’s enough for several cups of coffee.
Pour hot coffee in it and close the lid. It’ll stay piping hot for 4-6 hours and get cooler after that. After 8-12 hours is when most people find the coffee too tepid to enjoy.
The Cresimo carafe has double wall construction to provide maximum heat retention. With the stainless steel exterior, you can be sure it’ll last a long time without rust or damage.
The hand is easy to use, whether you are carrying the carafe around with you or pouring out coffee.
To dispense coffee, you don't have to open the lid. Simply press a tab.
Issues & Limitations
A common issue with the Cresimo carafe is that coffee somehow gets into the lid when you are dispensing. When you put the carafe back down, some coffee drips out of the lid and can stain linen or bedding.
Another issue is that the Cresimo carafe doesn't keep beverages piping hot for the entire 12 hour heat retention time.
If you like your coffee extra-hot, the carafe will keep it that way for about 4-6 hours.
Not a big fan of bed trays? Try the Cup Cozy pillow. It’s the best cup holder for your bed or sofa and can hold three drinks.
PROS
- Great for use in bed, on the sofa, or anywhere else
- The foam insulates drinks
- Stretchable holes can fit any drink
- Special holder for drinks with a handle
- Removable and washable cover
CONS
- It can tip over if you (or your kid or pet) flops on the bed
Our Review
The Cup Cozy Pillow is a thick mini pillow for your drinks. The boxy design is filled with foam and has three drink holders set into the surface.
You can put bottles, cans or handleless mugs in either of the side holders. The middle holder is for cups with a handle. It has a cut out that makes it easy to access the handle when the cup is in the holder.
The holes are designed to tightly grip whatever you put inside, which keeps drinks from falling out. The outer fabric of the pillow is also designed to be gripy, so it doesn't slide easily on the bed or sofa.
As a bonus, the foam in the pillow provides some insulation, keeping drinks cold or hot for longer.
The outer cover of the Cup Cozy Pillow is removable and washable, so don't worry if you spill anything on it. Just unzip it and throw it in the washer.
Issues & Limitations
The wide base of the Cup Cozy Pillow keeps it from tipping over easily when you move on the bed.
But a strong movement like someone flopping on the bed can tip it over and send your drink spilling on the bed. Watch out for that.
